How to become a CGMA designation holder
To become a Chartered Global Management Accountant® (CGMA®) designation holder, you need three years of verified relevant professional experience.
The PER process is an essential part of the CIMA Professional Qualification and CIMA’s membership application process. They complement the assessments and demonstrate your ability to apply your knowledge and skills in the context of your professional experience.
Your application will be assessed to determine whether you have gained enough experience to be awarded Associate membership — giving you the Associate Chartered Management Accountant (ACMA) and CGMA designations.

- Improved the relevancy in the assessment of the work experience (core activities), professional skills and behaviours required

Am I eligible?
You have been specially invited to join this pilot as you’ve already completed your Strategic Case Study Exam, so the next step is your application for CIMA membership. For your membership application and assessment of professional achievement, you must demonstrate:
- Three years of experience in a finance role. CIMA students and members hold a broad range of job titles, so we don’t prescribe a list of acceptable or expected job titles. We focus instead on what you do in your day-to-day work. This ensures the work activities you undertake during your initial professional development are relevant to becoming a qualified management accountant.
You are likely to be working or have worked in one of the following areas:
- Management accounting
- Finance business partnering
- Professional services and consulting
- Financial and management reporting
- Financial management
- Financial planning and analysis
- Performance management
- Audit and assurance
- Business intelligence and data analysis
- Risk management
- Achievement of work activities that are core and critical to the role of the management accountant
- Development of professional skills or behaviours that are essential to the management accountant
How does the pilot work?
- Sign up for the pilot before the deadline date of 23 June
- Receive a confirmation email between 24-30 June that you have been accepted for the pilot (limited slots are available)
- Sign up for and attend an information webcast (optional)
- Access the pilot 'Record of My Initial Professional Development' (IPD) and related support guidance
- Confirm your IPD supervisor/s (likely to be your manager or employer)
- Check the pilot support webpage regularly as you draft your application. Additional guidance and updated FAQs will be added throughout the pilot
- Complete the 'Record of My IPD form', get your supervisor to sign off and pay any relevant fees
- The deadline for IPD applications is 31 August. Email the 'Record of My IPD' to CIMA by this deadline
- Await confirmation of the outcome of your application (this will take up to eight weeks due to additional quality checks for the pilot — we’ll keep you updated)
- Complete the feedback survey
- Receive your membership decision

Email your application as 1 PDF file which includes your Record of My IPD form, and all IPD supervisors forms.

Terms and conditions
To sign up for the pilot, you must have at least three years of relevant experience and agree to:
- Submit a true and accurate account of your work experience.
- Pay the required fee and settle any outstanding subscriptions payments.
- Receive a discounted application fee only if your application is submitted using the correct pilot format and by the deadline date.
- Complete a follow-up survey and provide feedback to help CIMA make improvements.
- Be accepted on the pilot (after you express interest) by email confirmation. CIMA has a limited number of slots so cannot guarantee all applications will be accepted.
- Allow CIMA to seek additional information from candidates and other sources (employers etc.) in making its decision.
- Allow CIMA to undertake relevant internal and external validation of information provided by candidates as it sees fit and appropriate.
