Letter to the editor: closing the UK's productivity gap

5 July 2019

Dear editor,

If more people in work does not equal increased productivity (Office for National Statistics - Labour productivity, UK: January to March 2019) then the enabler must be missing.

To compete on the global stage and raise our productivity game, we need to embrace and invest in digital transformation but our success will highly rely on having a well-trained, tech-savvy workforce.  Yet evidence suggests this won’t happen overnight, in fact our 2018 Mind the Skills Gap research highlighted that one in four UK workers was not participating in any in-work training.

We have to better support current workers to reskill and upskill throughout their careers, not just at the start of their working lives. Skilled people will be the difference between the UK experiencing productivity growth or economic slowdown as we navigate Brexit and go beyond.

Yours sincerely,
